TWO AMIGOS, THREE SCENARIOS, SAME PUNISHMENT?

October 7th 2007

On yesterday's Sportsound on BBC Radio Scotland there was a bit of an argument broke out between Jim Traynor, (he's the one who thinks he knows it all) Murdo McLeod (ex Celtic player) and Chic Young (the one who can't pronounce the letter L).

They were debating what punishment will be handed out to Celtic by UEFA and McLeod was saying that because the fan who ran on to the park barely touched the Milan goalkeeper then European football's governing body would be more lenient.

Traynor claimed that was nonsense and UEFA will only consider the fact that Celtic were responsible for allowing the fan on to the playing area and that he struck a player and they would be punished accordingly.

Young, who fancies himself as a bit of a comedian but is unaware that he is about a hundred times less funny than any episode of Terry & June, agreed with Traynor.

He also said that the fan entering the field of play and the actions of the goalkeeper will be dealt with by UEFA as two separate incidents and what the 'keeper did or didn't do will have no bearing on the punishment Celtic get.

We already know that both incidents will be dealt with separately as regards punishments, it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out Chic, after all Celtic won't be fined for Dida feigning injury.

UEFA will look at the incident, see that a fan got on the park and made contact with a player and Celtic will be punished but consider these scenarios Traynor and Young:

1) A fan runs on and does exactly what happens the other night, goalie gives chase, falls down, ice pack, carried off, no serious injuries five minutes later etc.

2) A fan runs on and does exactly what happened the other night except the 'keeper drops to the ground instantly, pretends to be unconscious, is carried off and replaced by the substitute goalie.  He is treated by his club doctor and he misses the next two league matches because of "concussion".

3) A fan runs on and does exactly what happened the other night except he strikes the keeper on the side of the head and the player is carried off but still conscious.  His condition rapidly deteriorates and he later dies in the dressing room.

Young "understands" from his UEFA sources that the punishment Celtic will receive will most likely be a hefty fine and a warning that they will face ground closure if it happens again.

So are the two BBC Amigos seriously suggesting that Celtic would receive the same punishment from UEFA for all three scenarios?
