RANGERS CAN BE CHAMPIONS
OF EUROPE
October 24th 2007 Okay maybe that's taking things too far and SPL runners up would be a bit more realistic. However a 0-0 home draw against Barcelona has put them in a great position in their group with seven points after three games. Walter the Waistcoat got his tactics spot on once again and Rangers' performance reminded me of the Celtic performance in the Nou Camp the night David Marshall had his finest hour. Last night though the Gers goalie only had a couple of saves to make in the entire game and in the second half the Ibrox men had a couple of chances to win the game. I know that many Celtic fans can't bring themselves to give the boys in blue any credit for anything but if we'd been drawn in that group we would be highly delighted with seven points from the first three games. Champions League nights at Celtic Park are fantastic and I would love not to have to go through early season penalty shoot-outs against the likes of Spartak Moscow to get to the group stage so if that means Rangers winning and gaining coefficient points to help make it happen then I will take that every time. Some people of course can't see the bigger picture and would rather see Rangers get humped in every European game even if it means Celtic having to qualify in future years and no doubt there are Rangers fans who see it the other way round as well. We have our own chance to make an impression tonight in Lisbon and if we can avoid conceding the customary Champions League away game early goal then we might have a chance. If Celtic could manage to make history by winning their first Champions League away game then it would go a long way towards seeing us into the last sixteen. Three points tonight would put us onto six and with two home games to come we would be hoping to make it twelve. It's possible that even twelve would not be enough as three teams can finish with twelve if one team in the group ends up with none, that would mean results then aggregate scores between the teams home and away would come into play. The chances of that happening are slim though as more than likely there will be a draw here and there in the group. Celtic are 10/3 with Paddy Power and Ladbrokes to win tonight.
