CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BOOST
FOR SPL CHAMPIONS
November 13th 2007 The SPL Champions will go straight into the group stages of the Champions League from 2009 if proposals are ratified next month. The team finishing third in the English top league will also go straight in while there will be two qualifying rounds for the fourth placed team. UEFA President Michel Platini had wanted domestic cup winners to be awarded a place in the Champions League but that was overwhelmingly voted a non starter and plans for that have been abandoned completely. However, his plans to allow clubs from less privileged parts of Europe into the Champions League will go through with six new clubs coming in. |
