BORUC IN CONTROL

January 8th 2008

When I read of Artur Boruc's new £30,000 a week contract I immediately remembered a quote from the recent past - I'm not sure if it was Peter Lawwell, Gordon Strachan or someone else who said it but it went "The days of Celtic offering those wages are gone".

That was enough to make alarm bells ring in my ears and wonder why Celtic had suddenly done a U-turn.

I did start to suspect that Boruc, although he had signed a new contract was actually preparing to leave the club possibly as soon as this coming summer.

Artur has made me even more suspicious by saying publicly that he has signed the contract so that Celtic will profit from him.

This type of deal seems to be all the rage these days with clubs offering instant huge pay hikes knowing that it will only be short term as the players will be off within 12 months and at a tidy profit.

Thomson, Brown and now Fletcher are Hibs players who spring to mind while Petrov at Celtic and Robson at Dundee United are a couple more.

Artur has always said he will move on from Celtic eventually and that he has ambitions to play for Europe's finest but who's to say he can't win the Champions League with Celtic?

The Bhoys can lift the trophy without winning another game, four penalty shoot-outs like the one against Spartak Moscow would do nicely.

Boruc is well aware of how much money clubs are prepared to pay for him so the clause in his new contract which will allow him to leave will be set accordingly.

This means that he rather than Celtic will be in control of his destiny though it looks as though the Bhoys won't mind that too much if they rake in around £10 million.
