STRACHAN NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR NEWCASTLE

January 10th 2008

When Martin O'Neill was manager of Celtic he was linked with EVERY job that came up in the English Premiership yet despite taking Celtic to two SPL titles and the last sixteen of the Champions League twice as well as a Scottish Cup and League Cup in only two and a half seasons, current Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is not even on the bookies' lists for the Newcastle job - at least not yet.

That suits me fine because he is doing a great job at Celtic Park without the cash that O'Neill had to spend but it's a bit odd that the bookies don't recognise his achievements by putting him on their lists, even more amazing when you see some of the flops who are on there.

O'Neill is in the betting for the St James' job and you can have anything from 20/1 with the bookies to 130/1 on Betfair, quite big odds when you consider that he was top of the Geordie club's wanted list prior to them appointing Sam Allardyce and he would probably be there now had it not been for the fact that he was holding off because he was a serious candidate for the England job.

Harry Redknapp is in at 1/2 favourite despite claims this morning that he has stated he doesn't want the job.

The SFA has still to appoint a manager for the Scotland team and George Burley has come in from 20/1 to 6/1 but read into that what you like, I doubt it means anything other than he is definitely a candidate.

Graeme Souness has drifted in the betting from 4/1 to 7/1 while Mark McGhee is 15/8 and Tommy Burns 8/5 on Betfair.
