TIME FOR BROONY TO TAKE CHARGE

January 26th 2008

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is not everyone's favourite player but that's probably because a lot of the work he does goes unnoticed.

Jan will do for me but it looks like he will miss the match against Falkirk tomorrow with a head injury and Celtic may well struggle without him.

To make matters worse Derek Riordan has had the shits and may not be available either so it's likely to be McDonald and Killen up front with Zurawski an option.

Celtic and Rangers have both lost three SPL matches this season but we are four points behind because we have drawn four times to their two.

In three of those draws (Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Hibs) we created enough chances to win a barrowload of games and in the other we were 1-0 up on Hearts and conceded a 92nd minute equaliser.

With fifty-one points to play for there is still room for error but not much and Rangers will probably extend their lead to seven points today by beating Saint Mirren.

That being the case, to stay in touch Celtic must beat a Falkirk side who had been going well but are now without a win in their last four games, three of them against Aberdeen.

Celtic are very short at 1/2 to win the match and even as low as 4/11 with some which isn't good value when you consider that last week Rangers were available at 8/11 just before kick-off to win at Inverness.

Partybets are a pretty new firm on the scene and are trying to attract custom by offering bigger odds, they are going 9/1 for a 2-1 Celtic win (6/1 elsewhere).

A 2-0 Celtic win is 13/2 with Sportingbet and with the same firm it's 7/1 for a 1-0 win.

Scott McDonald is widely available at 4/1 to score the first goal with Chris Killen 6/1 and Aiden McGeady 10/1 with Extrabet.

An interesting one is Scott Brown at 16/1 with Skybet but only 8/1 with some others.

Broony has impressed since joining Celtic but has not been playing at the level he is capable of in recent matches, it's time for him to start taking charge of games again.

Elsewhere, it's FA Cup day in England so that's best avoided which in turn doesn't leave a great deal of choice.

In the Scottish First Division, Dunfermline should beat Morton (4/6 with Ladbrokes) and St Johnstone should beat Stirling Albion (4/9 with Totesport).

Slightly more risky but not bad value are Airdrie to win at Alloa (5/4 Coral), Brechin to win at home to Peterhead (11/8 Bluesquare) and East Fife to win at Arbroath (4/5 Expekt).

These odds can and usually do change.
