THIS IS THE REASON GORDON!

February 10th 2008

Gordon Strachan has been wondering why only just over 6000 fans turned up for the Kilmarnock v Celtic Scottish Cup tie and last weekend it was Radio Scotland presenter Richard Gordon and pundit Murdo McLeod asking the same thing.

Well instead of just assuming that the fans are not interested in the Scottish Cup why not simply ask the fans the reason?

I can't give reasons for the Killie fans' absence Gordon but I can give the main reasons for the Celtic fans' non-attendance.

Celtic's Scottish Cup opponents were not known until the Monday evening prior to the game the following Saturday.

Celtic FC only put the tickets on sale on the Wednesday because they only received them the previous day.

The tickets were only on sale to season ticket holders and not only that but they could only be collected from the Ticket Office at Celtic Park - no tickets posted out.

Three days to buy your ticket but the biggest problem was having to collect it from Celtic Park.

The Ticket Office was open on the Thursday and Friday until 7pm which would help some people but most of the usual away game ticket buyers would have been unable to get there without taking time off work.

The kick-off was at noon - a time that fans, players and managers hate and also a time that many thousands of people are only finishing work on a Saturday.

From my own point of view, I had travelled (like thousands of others) to Fir Park Motherwell on the Wednesday evening at a total cost of around £60, arriving at the turnstiles around 6.50pm just as they were announcing the cancellation of the game so there was certainly no way I would be travelling to Glasgow on either the Thursday or Friday night to buy a ticket for the Killie game.

I hope that clears it up for you.

P.S. I did point all this out four days before the game. Link
