IT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH
February 21st 2008 Unlike some people I'm not raving about how good Barcelona were last night, I'm more disappointed in how badly Celtic performed. Yes Barcelona were good but that was mainly down to Celtic being really poor and making it far too easy for them. How many times did Celtic give the ball away, it seemed to be every time they got hold of it that it was given straight back again? The idea appeared to be to keep the ball as much as possible and not launch it up the park straight to the visitors' back line but that resulted in playing three-yard passes in and around our own box. For the most part the Bhoys got away with that but the problems arose when trying to make a pass of more than ten yards, nine times out of ten it went straight to an opponent. When Gary Caldwell gave the ball away for the second goal I said straight away, this is a goal. Caldwell wasn't alone in making those passes though because almost everyone in the Celtic side was guilty of this. The Celts should have played it long more often because Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was winning everything that came his way but instead it was all short passing in their own half until it was eventually given away, usually after the second or third pass. Only Jan, Skippy McDonald, Paul Hartley and Artur Boruc get pass marks from me, the rest simply under performed on the night. Had everyone played to their potential then I am convinced we would have been defending a lead in two weeks time. The players know they can do much better than that and maybe we can sneak a wee 4-3 win over there, you never know.
