DOUGIE VIPOND ALMOST KILLED ME

April 24th 2008

I was watching Reporting Scotland last night and almost choked to death on my Mars Bar when legendary drummer-turned sports reporter Dougie Vipond came on and told us that the Italian giants had flown in to Glasgow.

I thought what the hell are Milan doing in Glasgow?  Then I thought he must mean Juventus or maybe Inter or Roma then I thought no, that can't be right either.

Turns out he meant Fiorentina - they are an Italian football team who are set to play against Rangers over at Lodge 1690 and the nearest they are to being Italian giants is that they are Italian and have a couple of players over six feet.

Rangers are just two games from a UEFA Cup final spot and are well capable of getting there too.

The Ibrox men have had a relatively easy passage so far and although normally there would be no poor teams in a UEFA Cup semi-final it just so happens that this season there are three.

If the Gers make it through to the final it is my understanding that they will be asking UEFA to put the game back by one calendar month to ease their fixture congestion.

With Walter Smith's attacking football policy I can see tonight's game being a cracking end-to-end encounter with Rangers coming out on top by six goals to five.

The City of Manchester holds it's breath.
