ASTON VEEYA NOT THE CLUB FOR ARTUR

June 26th 2008

Watching the recent Spain v Italy match I was amused that BBC commentator John Motson couldn't make up his mind on the pronunciation of Spanish striker David Villa's name.

Motson called him Veeya, Veeyar, Villa, Villar, Villia and Villiar all in the one match!

Anyway, reports that Martin O'Neill is interested in taking Celtic 'keeper Artur Boruc to Aston Veeya/Villa/Villar could well be true but I doubt if the Holy Goalie would be interested in taking a step down.

Boruc is well aware that not many people leave Celtic and go on to better things so he is happy to wait until one of Europe's big guns come calling.

It is often reported that players claim they want to play at the highest level and that the Premiership in England is that very place.

It's true that there are some great players plying their trade there but outside the top four clubs there are some pretty average players and teams.

Former European Champions Aston Villa are a big and well supported club but would you see Villa shirts in every city in the world, I don't think so.

Would they have taken 80,000 fans to Seville, I doubt it very much.

Even Chelsea who's owner is loaded are relative minnows compared to Celtic, you only need to look at how many fans they took to the Champions League quarter final tie against Fenerbahce, a mere 250 supporters.

Having bags of cash doesn't equate to being a big club, Gretna FC are an example of that and many clubs in England are now in the dangerous position of having owners who will one day decide they have lost interest.
