Celtic 1 St Mirren 0  10/08/2008

Celtic got off to a winning start in the SPL with a rather fortunate and unimpressive 1-0 win over St Mirren.

The Bhoys were awarded a second half penalty kick which I thought at the time was the correct decision but after seeing the replays later, it should have been a free kick to the Saints.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had a handful of Haining's shirt just below the chin but that apart, he was marginally offside to begin with.

No doubt there will be many occasions this season where decisions will go the other way but that won't be any consolation to Buddies boss Gus MacPherson or his players who gave Celtic a really tough time.

Celtic looked much as they did many times last season, rather sluggish with McDonald and Vennegoor of Hesselink often isolated.

The Bhoys midfield of Robson, Hartley, Brown and McGeady barely created anything of note and even though every one of them are proven goalscorers, their goal attempts amounted to a couple of wild shots by McGeady and a strike on target from Brown.

Artur Boruc saved the Celts a couple of points with a fabulous left handed save and Barry Robson won the points with an unconvincing penalty kick.

I would rather big Jan took the kicks because sooner or later goalies will figure out Robson's hard and low down the centre style.

Still, three points are in the bag and who knows, they may be vital come the end of the season.
