LET'S HOPE STRACHAN KNOWS
BETTER THAN THIS GUY
August 15th 2008 I am slightly concerned to hear that former Cardiff City captain Jason Perry claims that the sale of Glenn Loovens to Celtic was a fantastic piece of business for his former club. Even more concerning is that he goes on to say "No disrespect to Glenn but you would think Cardiff can replace him for a lot less money than £3m. "There are people who will argue that Glenn will be hard to replace but I do not agree, he was a very committed player but he was a player who broke things up and I have seen him bullied out of games. "He and Roger Johnson had struck up a very good partnership but I believe it is Johnson of the two who would clearly be the bigger loss. "Is he of Champions League standard yet? Probably not to be honest, I don’t think he was ready for the English Premiership but I think he will do fine in the Scottish Premier." Do fine in the Scottish Premier! He is costing between £2.5m and £3m and has about ten months left on his Cardiff contract. Maybe he will turn out to be a fantastic buy but I had the same hopes for Mo Camara, Kenny Miller, Adam Virgo and Lee Naylor who were brought in from Championship clubs. The Bluebirds signed Loovens from Feyenoord for around £250,000 after a successful loan spell. At least Gordon Strachan will have seen Loovens play at close quarters, something he admitted he hadn't done before signing Crosas from Barcelona recently. Former Celtic manager John Barnes had only seen Rafael Felipe Scheidt play on video before splashing out £5m for him and former Scotland boss Ally McLeod didn't bother to watch Peru play before Scotland were pumped by them in the '78 World Cup.
