BEACH BALL HUNDAY BACKFIRES

September 1st 2008

Celtic 2 Rangers 4 (August 31st 2008)

As soon as I saw all the beach balls and the Kenny Miller banner I knew that it would backfire.

The beach ball thing was okay to do once but doing it again was like watching a movie sequel - never as good as the original and in any case only Aalborg of our three opponents in Europe is anywhere near water and it's not too hot over there at this time of year.

Celtic never really looked like they would win this game and at 0-0 and 1-1 I had the feeling that a draw would be a good result.

Only Shaun Maloney looked like he could conjure something out of nothing but in the second half he hardly got a kick of the ball.

We lost bad goals, the first was similar to a goal the Karate Kid scored against us last season exposing the weakness on our left flank and Kenny Miller's volley was also fired in from our left.

The Mendes goal was a good strike but unlucky for us that it went through Hartley's legs.

The fourth goal, which also came from our left was a howler by Artur Boruc who was also partly to blame for the first goal.

Any chance of a comeback disappeared when Vennegoor of Hesselink got himself sent off just minutes after coming on.

The only complaints I have about the referee was that I thought we should have had a penalty when Nakamura was barged over in the box after about ten minutes and that he took too long to yellow card the chubby Elbows Cousin.

At the end of the day we were beaten by the better team and Rangers have shown they will be a real threat to our four in a row bid.

We are the team in the Champions League and the team that raked in millions from last season's tournament yet it's Rangers who have splashed out on new players while Celtic have been dragging their heels.

Some people think that winning the title is a forgone conclusion for us this term but tend to forget that we were more than a touch fortunate to win the title last season, it could be even tougher to win it this time.
