REF BLUNDERED BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE

December 30th 2008

Rangers supporters are still whingeing about the failure of referee Craig Thomson to send off Gary Caldwell on Saturday after bringing down Kenny Miller just outside the box.

I said at the time it was a shocking blunder by the ref to give them a free-kick and after having seen it again on replays it is as clear as day that the free-kick should have gone to Celtic.

The ball was played through to Miller who allowed it to bounce and then controlled it with his arm before Caldwell ran into the back of him.

The Celtic defender was given a yellow card and Rangers were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box which was wasted by Kris Boydinho.

The match itself was a poor one but winning the three points was all that mattered, however the Celts will struggle in the games ahead unless they improve on recent performances.

Scott McDonald was excellent again but some of his team-mates were less than average.

I am a Scott Brown fan but when is he going to learn not to overrun the ball or give it away in dangerous positions, he was full of energy on Saturday and did the defensive part of his job well but wasn't too clever with his passing or running with the ball.

McManus is also guilty of the stray pass and it was his that led to the Kenny Miller incident.

Samaras couldn't trap a bag of cement at the moment, he appears to be trying too hard and isn't releasing the ball when he should be.

Hartley and Caldwell did okay but Naylor was lucky not to be sent off after after a daft tackle when he was already on a yellow card.

Rangers were pish poor and I will be expecting a much tougher game against Dundee United next weekend.
