SCOTTISH CUP DRAW - ARE
WE BETTER WITH AN AWAY DAY?
February 9th 2009 The draw for the Scottish Cup sixth round takes places at 5.15pm today and I'm wondering if I should be wishing for an away tie given the number of times we have struggled at home over the past ten years in cup competitions. Saturday's 2-1 win over Queens Park was a prime example of what I'm talking about, it was a win but what a shocking performance. In the past ten years we have been knocked out in home cup ties against Aberdeen, Hearts, Falkirk and Inverness Caledonian Thistle and needed a 90th minute winner from Morten Weighorst to see off Dundee, a penalty shoot-out to take care of Partick Thistle and then Saturday's pathetic show against Queens Park. I don't know what it is about those home ties, whether it's the lack of atmosphere or what but we definitely have a problem at home. The attendance levels have certainly nose-dived in recent years - exactly ten years ago this week a crowd of 47,194 saw the Celts hammer Dunfermline 4-0 in the Scottish Cup, five years later 30,565 witnessed a 2-0 win over Ross County in the same competition and only 22,223 watched Saturday's win over Queens Park. Back in 2000 the Celtic v Dundee League Cup tie attracted 40,260 fans to Celtic Park in a midweek while only 19,258 attended this year's semi-final at Hampden against Dundee United. I would settle for an away tie at Station Park Forfar. Update.. Celts are away to the winners of St Mirren v Motherwell. Motherwell or St Mirren v Celtic
