WHAT LIES AHEAD - REASONS NOT TO BE CHEERFUL

March 24th 2009

After failing to win a SPL match for the tenth time this season and with still almost a quarter of the season still to go, I have come to the conclusion that Celtic are quite simply just a poor team, not quite as poor as you know who but poor nonetheless.

The Celts may still win the SPL title this season but what concerns me is if we do, what will happen in the Champions League next season as failure to do well in Europe on a regular basis has you slipping down the rankings in no time at all.

I cannot see where improvement on this season's European performances can come from other than investing in better quality players and that is something that simply will not happen.

If we do make the Champions League, we the punters will be asked to cough up our £100 or more for our three match packages once again but I can see there being huge swathes of empty seats next time as punters are simply not prepared to pay for mediocrity anymore.

Both of the times we reached the last sixteen there was more than a touch of fortune about them which of course you need at times but it led to some people believing we had a better team than we actually did.

The Champions League is a great place to be but I do wonder if we will ever take part in it again. If we continue to slip down the rankings then it could be first qualifying round ties a month before our season starts that we will be looking forward to with our highlight being progress to the third qualifying round and a tie against the third or fourth placed English team.
