DON'T READ THIS IF YOU ARE ALREADY DEPRESSED

May 2nd 2009

Celtic and Rangers in the EPL, what would it mean for us?  It would mean glamour games every week against the likes of Wolves, Wigan, Blackburn, Stoke City, Fulham, West Brom, Hull City etc.

The Old Firm would be raking in the TV money but to be honest I would be no more interested in going to watch those teams than St Mirren, Hamilton or Inverness CT.

Football has become boring but not just in the SPL.

There are some good games in the EPL and in the Champions League and even in the SPL but on the whole it's become a bore to see the same teams challenging for the honours every season.

The SPL is a two team league with ten others just making up the numbers (this is nothing new in Scotland of course), the EPL is a four team league with sixteen others making up the numbers and there are only ever six or eight teams now in with a chance of becoming European Champions.

The EPL is we are constantly told, the greatest league in the world but what they really mean is it has many of the world's top players and four of Europe's best teams.

Before it became The Premiership, the English First Division quite possibly was the greatest league in the world because at the beginning of each season every team in the division had ambitions of winning the title, now the ambition of every team outside the top four is to reach a points total that will guarantee them safety.

Going to Celtic Park to watch a SPL match has become a chore, you can't give a ticket away as people don't fancy sitting in a half-empty stadium with no atmosphere any more.

Would an EPL match be any different? Hell yeah, the first two or three seasons would see sell-out crowds but beyond that it would be back to what it is now, crowds of 45,000 being given as 58,000.

That has become an embarrassment too, giving the attendances as being in the 50,000's when they are over 10,000 less than that. What is the point of that Celtic? Yes 58,000 may have paid for a seat but we'd like to know the official ATTENDANCE at a game.

The SPL in it's current form is a loser so what can be done to spice it up? How about an eighteen team league with Celtic and Rangers starting each game with a one goal deficit or having to field five under 14's in the side?

Or just anything.. please!
