TWO DECISIONS WHICH
DETERMINED THE OUTCOME OF THE SPL TITLE
May 25th 2009 Everyone has their own thoughts on why the title was lost so I might as well give mine. The main reasons in my opinion were the non-sale of Kris Boyd by Rangers and the non-purchase of Steven Fletcher by Celtic in January. I believe that if Celtic had pushed the boat out to capture Fletcher in the January window then the Celts would be SPL Champions today. Celtic left it until a couple of days before the window closed to bid for the English-born Hibs striker but why, when they could have gone in for him when the window opened? Maybe they still wouldn't have been able to get him but they certainly would have had a better chance as Hibs would have had the whole window to get a new striker in themselves. Since our win at Ibrox when we went seven points clear we have failed in SPL games to beat Dundee Utd, Aberdeen, Inverness CT, Rangers, Motherwell, Dundee Utd again, Hearts, Rangers again, Hibs and finally Hearts again. Ten games in which we have dropped points since that win at Ibrox, could Steven Fletcher have won us one of those Old Firm games which would have wrapped up the title for us, or any of the other eight we failed to win? I believe so. Put it this way, we would would have had a better chance of it with him in the team than any of the other three woeful Amigos we were stuck with. The transfer fee would have been paid by next season's Champions League money, all of which will now go to Rangers because we won't make the group stages. I also believe that had Rangers sold Kris Boyd then they would not be SPL Champions today. You can say what you like about the guy but he can score goals. Celtic are not a good team by any means but to win back the title next season only the striking personnel need be changed. Yes there are other areas that need improved to make the Celts a better team. To progress in Europe almost every player would need replacing but to simply finish ahead of Rangers in the SPL won't take major surgery and any money we have to spend I'd like to see it all go on decent strikers. Roll on next season. |
