THERE IS A BRIGHT SIDE
July 18th 2009 The Celts have been drawn against Russian side Dinamo Moscow or Moscow Dynamo as they were known back in the days when they were one of the world's top teams. They are no longer one of the finest sides in the world but they are a decent team and have the advantage of being halfway through their season while the Celts won't have played a single competitive game by the time the two meet at Celtic Park on July 28th or 29th. Celtic have a couple of new players (and hopefully more to follow) who will take time to settle into the team and a defence that won't remember if they've to mark players or space but on the bright side, we won't have to fork out a hundred quid for the three match package. Do I think we won't make the group stages? Yes I do think we won't, I thought that as soon as we failed to beat Hibs towards the end of last season but I did think we'd make the final play-off round and now I don't. We are paying the penalty for failing to secure a striker and sending another out on loan back in January, the reluctance to buy probably being down to the fact that it was known the manager would be gone in the summer and that a new boss may not want to make use of a player signed by someone else. There is no excuse however for sending Cillian Sheridan on loan to Motherwell, that was just an 'old pals' act. With the lack of cash in the Scottish game it will become harder each year to produce a team good enough to do anything at all in Europe, our clubs will slide swiftly down the rankings with the SPL winners even having to go through a couple of qualifying rounds in the not too distant future. It looks like a return to the European football of the 80's and early 90's but I really do hope I'm wrong.
