BUT ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
August 19th 2009 Celtic look like they won't be joining Rangers in the Champions League this season after a 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal last night. That is the price of failing to win the SPL title last season but on the bright side we will now be taking part in the Europa League which is closer to the level Celtic are currently at. Apart from the financial benefits for the club of being in the Champions League there is little that we the supporters could have looked forward to in terms of progressing further had we made it through (yes I do know we are not actually out yet). Yes the Champions League is where everyone wants to be because that's where the money and glamour is but it's becoming a bit repetitive in my opinion, the latter stages are like watching EPL or La Liga matches these days and it's not going to change as the rich get richer. Back in the MO'N era it was a bit of a novelty to make the Champions League after years in the wilderness but as each year went by we were seeing the same teams, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica, Lyon, Barcelona, AC Milan, AC Milan, AC Milan. Since then, even though we have made it beyond the groups a couple of times the quality of player at Celtic has been on the decline and the Europa League may well be the level we will be competing at for some time to come.
