RANKERS ARE RANK ROTHEN

September 30th 2009

Rankers 1 Seville 4 (F O U R)

I saw the odds for a Seville win tumble from 11/10 to 10/11 yesterday and after watching the game wondered whether that late money had come from within either of the two camps but the thousands of empty seats would suggest that punters may have wagered their ticket money on a Seville win so they will not know whether to laugh or cry this morning.

It was the first time I'd seen Rankers' new boy Jerome Rothen and to be honest he looked as if he's exactly as his name suggests but he wasn't the only one.

'Roger' Whittaker was woeful (watch him at all of the goals) and Madjid Bougherra reminds me of Titus Bramble on an off day. The only ones who looked half decent were Thomson, Naysmith and the world's oldest looking 30 year old, Pedro Mendez.

The referee was heavily criticised but I thought he had a good game apart from failing to book Naysmith for diving in the first half when the striker threw himself to the ground in a bid to win a penalty and get his opponent sent off.

Now I know Celtic are not the greatest team around but surely, surely we must be better than them?

We know that on Sunday Watty will play the old and trusted 4-5-1 against us which he has been doing since the days of Laudrup and co so if Tony Mowbray doesn't set up his team to match that then he could be in trouble because let's not forget, they were the rankest team ever to get to a European final and are capable of winning ugly even without Carlos Cuellar.

Before the big one on Sunday we face European football's biggest cheats at Celtic Park on Thursday night in the Europa League.

I was at the original tie 25 years ago and have hoped every year since then to be drawn against them so that we could give them a doing, now that chance has come but maybe at the wrong time, 5 or 6 years ago would have been the ideal time with the King of Kings at his peak. Still, I am hopeful we can do it.
