REF HAS OLD FIRM SHOCKER
October 4th 2009 Rankers 2 Celtic 1 The man in charge of the first Old Firm game of the season found it all too much for him as he turned in a complete nightmare of a performance which was matched only by the Celtic defence. Craig Thomson was the man in the middle and he did little to enhance his chances of getting another Old Firm game as he missed a catalogue of fouls throughout the game. In no particular order... he failed to award a penalty and book David Weir for a stone wall foul on Shaun Maloney in the box. He failed to red card David Weir for a shocking 'tackle' on Scott McDonald, in fact he didn't even give him a yellow for what could have been a leg breaker. He failed to red card Nicho Nacho for trying to score with his hand, he clearly signalled a handball and awarded the free kick to Celtic but Novo was already in the book and should have been off. He booked Shaun Maloney and Mark Wilson for diving yet failed to do the same with Pedro Mendes because his offence was outside the box. He failed to book Naysmith for a wild swipe at Aiden McGeady on the touchline, he played the advantage but Naysmith should have gone into the book when the ball went out for a goal kick. Apart from those blunders mentioned above he did just fine. Glenn Loovens in the Celtic defence (!) had one of the worst performances in a Celtic jersey that I have seen for many years. He was hustled off the ball by the waif-like in comparison Kenny Miller for the Huns' second goal and went downhill from then on in. Even in the last few minutes he attempted to pass to the invisible man on the touchline when he had no players near him. His partner in crime Stephen McManus was not much better, he made countless errors but he has a bit of an excuse in that he missed most of the pre-season and the early games and may not be 100% yet, the same cannot be said for Loovens. I am not convinced that Landry N'Guemo is an anchor man, he too makes too many mistakes and in a position where you can ill afford to. The only bright spot was the performance of new Chinese recruit ZZ who looks like he can play a bit.
