OLD FIRM REF TRIES A COVER UP JOB

October 5th 2009

Blundering referee Craig Thomson has admitted that he should have awarded Celtic a penalty when Shaun Maloney was brought down by David Weir in the box with Celtic trailing by only one goal.

It is very easy to admit to that one because the excuse of being at the wrong angle or the speed of the incident making it difficult to be certain comes into play.

There were incidents where Weir and Lafferty may well have been given straight red cards but that is a decision to be made by the referee and some will say he got it right while others will say he didn't.

The one from which there can be no escape and no excuses made was Nacho Novo's deliberate handball.

The player tried to score by knocking the ball into the net with his hand but was spotted by Thomson who awarded Celtic a free kick and quite clearly indicated that it was for a handball against Novo.

With Novo already being on a yellow card the referee had no option but to send him off - but he didn't for reasons only he knows.

It is my belief that Thomson has admitted to the penalty incident blunder today ONLY to deflect from his other mistakes and this one in particular.

It will be interesting to hear if this incident even gets a mention on Sportsound tonight.
