Firstly, if you are one of those people who has to bet just for the thrill of it then it's almost certain you will fail to make a long term profit, you must treat each bet as if it were an investment at the bank.

Secondly, never bet in multiples - trebles and accumulators may pay big money if they come up but there is usually at least one selection that lets you down so single bets only.

Finally, you can't just go betting different amounts like £20 on one team and £30 on another, you must start with a bank and bet 10% of whatever your bank may be, halving your stake if your bank drops to half or doubling your stake if you double your bank.

The rest is down to your own judgement and research of teams' form etc, it's not just a case of backing the teams at the top of the league table as tables can often be misleading.

A good example this season (2007/08) is Brechin City who had a terrible start to the season winning only three of their first nineteen games then they went on a run of 15 games that has seen them lose one, draw three and win eleven with most of those wins at good prices like 11/8's and 7/4's simply because they were not top of the league table even though their form was as good as anyone's.

What you must be careful of are table toppers like Arsenal who at this point in time have gone four domestic games without a win but are always very short-priced simply because of their league position.

A couple of consecutive defeats for a team is always a good reason to leave them alone for a bit and don't forget that draws are also losers but I would maybe give a team who had been on a good run then drawn a couple of games another chance.

Watch as many games as can on TV, that way you get a far better idea of how teams are playing and it might be that you spot a team who you didn't realise were going well.

Avoid cup matches.

You must always be on the lookout for value, bookies regularly make mistakes when pricing football and after a while you will be able to spot them particularly if you have been following the fortunes of a particular team.

Many people are put off doing singles by the short prices but if you look at it like putting money in a savings account and watching the interest grow then you are getting a better deal than you get at the bank.

Most punters I know would just fire any profits they made straight back onto another bet but why not give it a go just in theory rather than putting any hard cash on and see how it goes, good luck.
